Kevin Bassam has a jewel of a business … and now it is
shining even more brightly with the help of commercial property
expert John Truslove.
K Bassam Jewellery Services has just opened a new shop in Church
Street, Bromsgrove, to add to long-established premises in
Stourbridge and Kidderminster.
And, unlike many in the trade, each of the branches has an
on-site workshop where people can watch items being repaired and
manufactured.
"Not many others are doing what we are doing," said Mr Bassam.
"We offer our customers the rare chance to see jewellery craftsmen
at work in a traditional workshop environment.
"It enables us to operate quickly and efficiently, so that we
can provide the best service possible."
The Bromsgrove outlet has seen a "steady start" since opening in
the summer. Kevin has redecorated the shop, restored the original
parquet flooring, installed a new hand crafted wooden window frame
and fitted out a polishing room off the workshop.
Mr Bassam said he had been looking to open new premises for
several years and, despite the difficult economic times, was not to
be put off when at last "everything came together".
And does jewellery - gold and diamonds - still have a touch of
magic about it in the eyes of the public?
"Yes, it certainly has," said Mr Bassam.
The family-run business has seven employees.
Mr Bassam opened his first specialist jewellers in Court Street,
Stourbridge in 1992 after studying at the School of Jewellery in
Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter - now part of Birmingham City
University,
He opened a sister branch in Kidderminster in 1999 which is now
located in Blackwell Street.
The firm makes jewellery to order; restores rings, earrings,
brooches and bangles; undertakes specialist jewellery, watch and
clock repairs; designs bespoke items; purchases second hand
jewellery and old gold; provides Assay and hallmarking services and
does trophy engraving and hand engraving.
There is an online catalogue and an eBay Shop.
The 331 sq ft Bromsgrove premises were taken on a rent of
£8,000 a year and arranged by Truslove on behalf of landlord
Matthew Horton.
Mr Truslove said: "Bassams is an excellent, go-ahead business
and I am sure that going forward the new shop will prove a jewel in
the crown.
"We are pleased we were able to help Kevin expand his
operation."
The shop is on a three year lease and is well positioned in the
town centre.
