Pupils from Greenfields Community Primary School, Kettering were
treated to an extra-special assembly when Dan Platten, health and
safety advisor at Loughborough-based contractor and developer,
William Davis Ltd delivered an interactive presentation about the
dangers of playing on a building site.
Together with housing and regeneration group, LHA-ASRA, William
Davis is constructing 18 eco-friendly, highly sustainable homes on
three sites; eight homes on Whiteford Drive, five homes on Hawson
Close and a further five homes on Fishton Close. LHA-ASRA and
William Davis teamed up with the local school to help educate the
children about the hidden hazards on a construction site.
In a special presentation, Dan called volunteers to the stage to
demonstrate the protective equipment that should be worn including
hard hats, high-vis jackets, goggles, gloves and ear defenders
together with outlining what steps are taken to prevent
accidents.
Anne Binns, acting headteacher, Greenfields Primary School said:
"This was a valuable learning experience for our children as we
have a lot of construction work in the area at this time. The
children really enjoyed the assembly and have since generated some
fantastic posters consolidating the key messages."
Michele Walker, programme delivery manager, LHA-ASRA added: "It
was great to see the children so engaged. Our three sites are
in the centre of a residential area with lots of family housing
around so ensuring children understand the danger of building sites
is very important to LHA-ASRA."
The £2.2m Whiteford Drive scheme is being built to Code
for Sustainable Homes (CSH) Level 5 and the properties will utilise
photovoltaic tiles and rainwater harvesting. Funding has been
provided by the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA) and the
project is due for completion in Summer 2011.
