One of the UK's best known organic farms could find fame all
over again - this time as a calendar 'pin up'.
Fordhall Organic Farm, in Market Drayton North Shropshire, has
won through to the national finals of a photographic competition
organised by Triodos Bank, Social Enterprise Coalition, and Social
Enterprise Magazine, in conjunction with Social Enterprise West
Midlands.
The announcement comes on Social Enterprise Day - 18 November -
a national day to raise awareness of social enterprises -
businesses that trade for a social or environmental purpose.
The farm, which operates as a social enterprise, won the West
Midlands heat of the 'Social Vision: business at its best'
competition with a picture of a tractor and trailer used to
transport Fordhall's many visitors.
That snap goes head to head with winning pictures that portray
the work of social enterprises from all over the country, when the
finals are held later this month.
The competition will be decided in a week-long on-line vote by
visitors to the Social Enterprise Live website,
www.socialenterpriselive.com.
Fordhall Organic Farm first hit the headlines in 2006 when it
was saved from development by a wave of international support.
Twenty-somethings Ben and Charlotte Hollins went public with an
appeal for help when they needed to raise £800,000 to ensure
that the life's work of their late father, organic farming pioneer
Arthur Hollins, continued after his death.
Supporters from around the world bought shares in the farm for
£50 a time, ensuring that it was safe from developers.
Fordhall is now run as a community land initiative, and is leased
to Ben and Charlotte who continue to farm it organically.
Fordhall Organic Farm is also one of five flagship organisations
supported by Social Enterprise West Midlands.
Charlotte Hollins said: "It's a lovely thing to have won the
regional finals, and exciting to think that we might even win the
national competition.
"But it's even better to know that our work on the farm is being
recognised."
The photographic competition is now in its third year, and
carries cash prizes of £750 apiece for the winning
photographer and the featured social enterprise.
Twelve of the best pictures will then be selected to illustrate
the Social Enterprise Coalition's annual calendar. A selection of
photographs submitted for the competition will also be exhibited at
the Lumen Café in Tavistock Place, London.
Kevin Maton, Network Director of Social Enterprise West Midlands
said: "We would like to congratulate Fordhall and thank everyone
who entered this year's competition. Every picture tells a story
and reminds us of the inspiring work that social enterprises do
across the region. We hope that those people encountering
social enterprises for the first time on this day will be inspired
to find out more."
