Birmingham City Council leader Mike Whitby has been made a
Fellow of the Institute of Directors.
The announcement was made at the opening of IoD West
Midlands' new offices in Argent's No.11 Brindleyplace complex.
Around 50 of the city's leading figures from the business and
professional community attended the event.
Councillor Whitby, an IoD member since the late 1980s, said he
was delighted at the honour.
"It is an organisation close to my heart," he stated. "As a
director of many companies it is essential that you meet
like-minded people. It is an opportunity to share any business
anxieties you may have, take advantage of the comradeship, and
escape the loneliness of the long distance director.
"The Institute of Directors is an organisation all governments
listen to and which lobbies effectively for enterprise."
IoD regional chairman John Rider praised Councillor Whitby's
contribution to business, politics and the advancement of
Birmingham.
"Mike has shown outstanding leadership over the years and this
is a measure of the esteem in which he is held by the business
community," said Mr Rider.
