Step back in time to the days of air raid warnings, make do and
mend and powdered eggs on a wartime themed experience at
Shugborough this month.
The estate, near Stafford, is hosting an entertaining themed
tour and lunch on Saturday November 20 which takes a look at the
story of Shugborough during World War II.
Guests will be greeted by a complimentary glass of traditional
elderflower wine before being treated to a delicious wartime two
course lunch in the lovely Lady Walk Tearoom. The meal includes
bangers and mash, made with Shugborough's own sausage recipe,
followed by homemade jam roly poly and custard.
A costumed guide will then lead visitors through the impressive
servants' quarters where the group will find out about the land
army at the estate's walled garden, the effects of rationing on
families and the role of the Earl of Lichfield in the Stafford home
guard - a gentleman who manned his post on the Shugborough railway
line every day while the butler brought him port and cake!
The tour starts at 12.30pm and costs £19.95 including
food. Places must be pre-booked and early booking is advised.
