A 20 year-old trainee site manager has received a top accolade
after being named Technical Trainee of the Year by the
Stourbridge-based Western region of Mansell Construction
Services.
Sam Smith, from Cradley Heath, was given the award after working
on several major Mansell projects across the region including
William Lench Court - an £8.3 million project for Lench's
Trust involving the construction of 63 sheltered homes in Quinton.
As well as training as a site manager with Mansell, Sam is doing
a day-release degree course in construction management and
economics at Birmingham City University.
He was presented with his award by Mansell site manager Wayne
Gwilt and Chris Conway, director of undergraduate studies at the
University.
Highly Commended in Mansell's technical trainee awards was
24-year old Marc Bailey, a trainee quantity surveyor from
Northfield.
Mansell regional managing director, Steve Davies, said that
Mansell put a lot of effort into supporting and encouraging young
people to learn construction skills to ensure that they were aware
of the variety of opportunties available, and considered
construction as a career of choice.
He said, "Mansell fully supports career development through
training schemes and apprenticeships and we take their training
extremely seriously. As well as construction trades we need
technical and management skills. Sam has done extremely well and
made an important contribution to key projects for Mansell, which
will give him the experience he needs for his future
development."
