In celebration of the construction of the first new Council
houses to be built in Mansfield for more than 30 years, Executive
Mayor of Mansfield District Council, Tony Egginton, has cemented a
commemorative date stone into place at the Bellamy Road Estate,
marking the significance of this major regeneration scheme.
Development partners, Loughborough-based contractor and
developer, William Davis Ltd, council leaders, residents and guests
joined together to witness the stone laying - the first major
milestone of the £5m development.
The project, which has been part funded by the Homes &
Communities Agency (HCA) to over £2.5m, is now well underway
and when complete, will provide 43 new family homes on the Colston,
Shelston and Syerston areas of the estate. Mansfield District
Council has also contributed £2.5m to the project.
The new homes are set to breathe new life into the area,
replacing a series of outdated flats which were previously
demolished to make way for the three and four bedroomed homes,
available for rent.
Richard Cornes, partnerships director, William Davis Ltd said:
"This stone laying commemorates a significant point in the
transformation of the Bellamy Road Estate and will act as a
permanent marker to the rejuvenation of the area.
"Regeneration projects, such as this are vital to sustain a
flourishing community and together with Mansfield District Council,
we are committed to building homes that residents can be proud of
and through local employment initiatives and community involvement,
help to breathe new life back into this part of
Mansfield.
Tony Egginton, executive mayor, Mansfield District Council said
: "This is a momentous occasion as it is the first new Council
housing to be built in Mansfield for 30 years. The scheme will
breathe new life into the area and provide Council tenants with
much-needed high quality family homes that are energy
efficient."
Margaret Allen, director for the HCA East Midlands, said: "This
investment is one way we are helping Mansfield District Council
realise its local housing aspirations. The project will contribute
to the regeneration of the Bellamy Road Estate and makes good use
of publicly owned land."
With a contract value to William Davis of £3.7million, it
is hoped that when complete, the new properties will go some way to
meeting the increasing demand for affordable rented properties in
the district.
Designed by NCHA Design, the new accomodation will be built to
achieve a Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 rating, with half of
the homes benefitting from ground source heat pumps for domestic
hot water and the other half utlitising photovoltaic tiles helping
to reduce electricty costs. Other features include water saving
appliances and low energy lighting, ensuring that all the
properties are highly eco-efficient. The homes will also be built
to Lifetime Homes standards, enabling residents to remain in their
homes for as long as possible.
