School children from St Peter's C of E Primary School on Bellamy
Road, Mansfield welcomed a very special visitor when Considerate
Constructors mascot, IVOR GOODSITE dropped in to announce the
winners of the William Davis Safety On-Site Poster competition,
aimed to highlight the hazards of playing on a construction
site.
Aided by Dan Platten, Health & safety Advisor with
Loughborough-based contractor and developer William Davis Ltd and
Cllr Heather Henshaw, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Mansfield
District Council, Ivor awarded gift vouchers to six youngsters
whose winning posters will be enlarged and mounted on the hoardings
of a £5m regeneration project on the Bellamy Road Estate.
Dan said: "We are delighted to have Ivor touring with the
William Davis H & S team, visiting Nottinghamshire schools near
to where we have active construction sites. With his help and
through interactive, engaging education such as the poster
competition, we are reinforcing the vital message that playing on
or near to a building site is potentially life threatening - we
can't wait to see the winning posters adorning the hoardings around
the site.
Pearl Day, acting head teacher, St Peter's C of E Primary School
said: "It is so important that children are aware of the hazards of
playing on a building site. The worthwhile visit from Ivor and his
team ensured that message was understood by all St Peter's
pupils."
Heather Henshaw, Mansfield District Council's Portfolio Holder
for Housing, added: "I was very impressed with the hard work that
all the children put in to designing the posters. The standard of
entries was incredibly high. We hope the enlarged posters that will
go on display on the Bellamy Road Estate will help children to
understand the dangers of construction sites and encourage them to
stay away and instead play safely elsewhere. "
The £5 million project on the Bellamy Road Estate, which
has been part funded by the Homes & Communities Agency, the
national housing and regeneration agency in England (HCA), is well
underway. When complete it will provide 43 new family homes on the
Colston, Shelston and Syerstone areas of the estate and will
replace a series of outdated flats, which were previously
demolished to make way for the three and four bedroomed homes,
available for rent.
