Lincolnshire signmakers Allen Signs joined in the celebrations at Newark College in Nottinghamshire following the completion of its new sixth form centre.

The Lincoln-based firm designed and made the plaque which was unveiled by Ian Shaw, Lincoln College Chair of the Corporation, during the official opening ceremony on Tuesday (19th October).

Also in attendance was Trent Valley Construction which appointed Allen Signs to produce the signage for the new Newark Sixth building. This included external banners, free-standing monoliths, window graphics, wall graphics, internal door signs and directional signs.

Work on the £0.5m development got under way in July 2010 and was completed in time for the start of the new term on 6th September.

Prior to this Newark College, which is part of  Lincoln College, did not offer A-levels but it now offers courses in English Language, English Literature, Psychology, Sociology, Maths, History and Law with more subjects set to be introduced next year.

As well as a large common study area with computers, WiFi access and a comfortable seating area, the facility boasts state-of-the-art IT workshops, tutorial rooms, classrooms and an online testing suite.

There are currently 70 students enrolled at Newark Sixth but is hoped in the future there could be up to 250.

Centre Manager at Newark College Jeanette Bell said: "This is a really exciting development for Newark College and gives students in the town additional options of what and where to study.

"Newark Sixth has expanded the range of post-16 options locally which also means students don't have to travel outside the area if they want to study A-levels at college rather than stay at school."

Commenting on the new signage, Jeanette added: "I think the colour scheme is superb and the materials used are of really high quality. The team at Allen Signs worked extremely well with our in-house designer bringing our ideas to life.

Managing Director David Allen added: "It was a pleasure to work with Trent Valley Construction and Lincoln College on this exciting new development and it's great to see the students enjoying learning in their new environment."
