Twenty-nine year old Richard Lander, who graduated from
Birmingham City University with a First Class BSc Honours degree in
quantity surveying, has been awarded the Wakemans Law Prize.
The Law Prize is presented annually by national property and
construction consultancy Wakemans in recognition of outstanding
achievement by the top student in the School of Property,
Construction and Planning faculty at the university. During a
recent visit to Wakemans' head office in Edgbaston Richard received
his certificate and a cheque for £250 from Wakemans managing
director John Woodhall.
Richard studied part time for his degree whilst also working as
a project quantity surveyor for Carillion Construction Limited,
gaining experience from working on industrial, residential, civil
engineering and education projects prior to graduating.
Law was not only an important element of Richard's degree
course, but is also a key area in his roll at work. He won
the Wakemans Law Prize for his dissertation on the Local Democracy,
Economic Development and Construction (LDEDC) Act 2009, which
examined how this legislation aims to improve payment practices and
dispute resolution within the construction industry and
implications these will have on main contractors.
"Quantity Surveying is challenging because it gives you the
opportunity to develop skills in many different areas whilst
working with a variety of people and professions," says Richard,
who lives in Tividale.
"I'm delighted to win the Wakemans Law Prize and on behalf of
all students studying quantity surveying at Birmingham City
University I would like to thank Wakemans for their
support."
Having decided to pursue a career in quantity surveying, Richard
quickly realised the value of an RICS accredited degree from
Birmingham City University, as their part time programme enabled
him to study whilst being in full time employment gaining valuable
work experience.
The Law Prize is one of a series of initiatives Wakemans has
developed to promote excellence in property consultancy and
challenges quantity surveying students to broaden their horizons
and fulfil their potential.
