Huntingdon Primary and Nursery School in St Ann's, Nottingham
played host recently to the Health & Safety team from
Loughborough based contractor and developer William Davis Ltd and a
representative from Tuntum Housing Association, who delivered a
very timely lesson on the dangers of playing on a building site and
gave a taste of next terms Out & About Foundation topic for
Foundation Stage.
In two specially tailored presentations, one for key stage one
(4-7yrs) and the second for key stage two (7-11yrs) children, Dan
Platten, Health & Safety Advisor with William Davis clearly
demonstrated the hidden hazards of a construction site, what steps
are taken to prevent accidents, careers opportunities for budding
builders and launched the William Davis Safety on Site Poster
Campaign.
"With the school holidays looming and the construction of
Balisier Place directly opposite the school, this presentation is
extremely pertinent," said Dan. "At William Davis we try to
educate children on the implications of playing on a construction
site by providing them with a broader understanding of the industry
as a whole and not just by scaremongering."
"Working closely with the staff at Huntingdon Primary school and
our project partners Tuntum Housing Association we aim to encourage
the children, through involving them in the construction process in
a fun and interactive way, to see both the benefits and the dangers
of a building site."
Becky Hyder, leader of inclusion, Huntingdon Primary School
said, "Part of the Every Child Matters agenda is to make sure that
all children are safe. This is vitally important to us as the
summer holidays are almost here. All the children in school
thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from the entertaining and
informative assemblies. We will use this as an opportunity to
continue to work with William Davis on our topic 'Out and About'
and towards obtaining our 'Eco-school's' Award."
Winners of the poster campaign will be announced at the start of
the new school term in September with the best designs being turned
into larger posters displayed on the site hoarding boards to act as
a constant warning to any child tempted to play on site.
