The impact of the Digital Economy Act 2010 on new media and
technology service providers and designers, is to be debated at a
one-off interactive seminar run by the technology legal team of
Nottingham law firm Berryman.
The free breakfast event takes place on Thursday 22nd July 2010
and as Partner and head of the technology team Ed Wright explains,
will examine the new coalition Government's updates to the Act
which could have an instant affect on the sector:
"The Digital Economy Act was passed at the end of the last
Parliament and introduces controversial obligations on internet
service providers (ISPs), but with the objective of reducing online
copyright infringements which have seen a significant increase in
recent years.
"The Act also gives new powers to the Government to obtain a
court order to block access to websites and servers that are
already being used or likely to be used with copyright
infringement, and extends the Government's ability to regulate
domain names.
"The technology sector is understandably concerned about how
this new system will in fact be funded, in light of the
Government's commitment to heavily cutting spending, and
particularly as the new scheme is projected to cost the sector
approximately £15 million, according to Government
predictions.
"ISPs, owners of interactive websites and web content creators
and designers are understandably keen to know the impact the Act
and the new Government have on them," says Ed. "This short highly
interactive discussion seminar will deliver an essential update on
the current regime, the impact of the Act, and the government's
plans on what to do next."
