Staff from accountancy firm Ballard Dale Syree Watson should be
well qualified to calculate the miles involved in their gruelling
bike ride from London to Paris to raise money for breast cancer
sufferers.
Tax manager, Peter Herniman and colleague accounts and audit
manager Paul Gee along with two other accounting friends who live
in London, will be leaving the country on the 24th June to embark
on the biking adventure of a lifetime, all in the aid of a good
cause.
The friends have all been affected indirectly by the emotionally
and devastating effects of breast cancer, and wanted to do
something to both raise awareness and much needed funds for Cancer
Research UK.
Their fund raising target of £1,000 is hoped to be
achieved by pledges of sponsorship from friends, family and
colleagues.
The group will need to complete 65* plus miles per day for them
to arrive in Paris on the 26th. To accomplish the required levels
of fitness the 'forty something' part time cyclists have all had to
undergo a physical training regime of riding three to four times a
week as well as running regularly to build up strength and
stamina.
They will face many challenges along the way least of all
navigating their way through the minor roads of rural France, which
will be a test in map reading. The group will also be at a
disadvantage as none of them are really fluent in French.
Mr Herniman said: "It isn't just the distance that will be the
hardest challenge, we see the cultural differences as being
something that may be a handicap. For example as the trip is
unaided it will be down us to find our way through some fairly
remote areas of France, where it is unlikely that people will speak
English proficiently and we will all struggle to communicate with
only the basics of French."
"However we are all very determined and we are sure if we meet
our fund raising target, aching muscles and the other discomforts
associated with a long-haul bike ride will be well worth it."
