A display team set to perform at this year's Cosford Air Show
have painted their aircraft in the Spitfire colour scheme and
dedicated them to the brave 'few' of the Battle of Britain.
The Tucano Display team have painted all of their aircraft,
regardless of squadron, in the famous colours of the aircraft of
the Second World War and will entertain the crowds at RAF Cosford
on June 13.
The 2010 display pilot Tom Bould is from 72 (R) Sqn and the two
aircraft he will display in are painted to represent the Spitfires
of two men who were very successful Battle of Britain pilots and
who both subsequently commanded 72 Sqn later in the war.
He said: "The two pilots were Group Captain Robert Wardlow
Oxspring and Group Captain Charles Brian Fabris Kingscombe.
"Robert 'Bobby' Oxspring joined the RAF in 1938 and became a
fighter pilot as his father had been during the First World War. He
saw distinguished active service throughout the Battle of Britain
with his father's old unit 66 Sqn.
"Brian Kingcombe joined the RAF in 1936 and despite being
seriously injured in a car crash while at RAF College, he qualified
as a pilot in 1938. He saw combat over Dunkirk in May 1940 and in
the latter stages of the Battle of Britain, during which he was
shot down and again seriously injured."
