The hidden dangers of fraud related crimes were highlighted to
charities in Coventry by an expert panel.
The ExtraCare Charitable Trust, the Swanswell Charitable Trust
and Katharine House Hospice were among the organisations who took
part in a teleconference called A Breach of Trust - Fraud in the
Not for Profit Sector at Yorkshire Bank's Financial Solutions
Centre at the Ricoh Arena.
Guests heard from a range of specialists who gave valuable
advice on combating fraud in the not for profit industry.
Tom Vosa, Head of Market Economics Europe at National Australia
Bank, discussed the market outlook for the charity sector before Dr
Stephen Hill, Trustee Director of the Fraud Advisory Panel, gave a
presentation about fraud in the not for profit sector and Sean
Finnegan, Regional Managing Director of Giles Insurance Brokers,
highlighted the insurance solution for charity fraud.
Steve Evans, a business banking partner at Yorkshire Bank in
Coventry, said the teleconference had provided useful advice and
information.
"It is vital that charities don't gloss over the rising problem
of fraud because the outcome damages their profits and the people
they are set up to help," he said.
"Everyone who attended said the session had proved really useful
and we are always keen to provide these kinds of events for our
members.
"The fall-out from the economic recession has impacted hugely on
the charity sector as corporate and public donations fall which
means charitable organisations are being forced to look at ways to
create innovative profit streams.
"These ideas along with a rise in fraud related crimes are
putting more pressure on the top and bottom ends of charitable
organisations.
"We hope this seminar gave people working in this industry some
valuable advice to combat fraud as well as the sorts of procedures
which can be put in place to try to prevent it happening in the
first place."
