V-bombers to kick off this year's Cosford Air Show

The big 'V-bombers' will be strutting their stuff to kick off this year's Cosford Air Show - but for once they will not be the biggest aircraft in the skies.

The Large Model Association will launch the flying display at the event on June 13 with more than an hour of entertainment for the crowds.

The Association will be showing off a Victor/Vulcan formation and will be flying several World War Two fighter aircraft to mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

The great battle will also be remembered at the Association's large model show taking place at RAF Cosford on July 17 and 18.

Dave Johnson, chairman of the group, said: "We will be flying several World War Two fighters in formation at the air show but out main formation flight this year will be the new Victor/Vulcan formation.

"However at our weekend large model show we are celebrating the 70th anniversary with a full two hours flying each day of Battle of Britain aircraft."

The Avro Vulcan has a stunning wing shape giving it the most radical appearance of the three V bombers. It became an integral part of the UK's nuclear deterrent, and was based all around the country, ready to react to any attack. The Vulcan took part in the Falklands war and was retired soon afterwards.

The Handley Page Victor was the last of the three into and out of service. All three V bombers were designed with high-level attacks in mind, but ended up being asked to perform low-level missions. As the cold war ended, Victors were re-tasked to recce and tanking duties.

Tickets for the Large Model Aircraft Rally are now on sale at the RAF Museum Cosford priced at £9 for adults, £5 for children and £7 for senior citizens with a family ticket of two adults and up to two children retailing at £20.

On site camping including entrance to the show is only £40.00 for the weekend. Contact Dave Bailey for more details on camping at dave.bailey08@tiscali.co.uk or call 07827 675665.

Gates open at 8.30am and any pictures taken on the day can be entered into the Museum's Battle of Britain 70th Anniversary Photography Competition.
