A care home near Burton-on-Trent has been making sure that the
services it offers to the local community are "dementia
friendly."
Mount Pleasant care home, which provides 24-hour residential
care to 50 older people, has announced that it is now registered to
support and empower elderly residents living with dementia, which
affects 820,000 people across the UK.
Mount Pleasant - which is part of the Caring Homes Group - has
already been building up a strong reputation in the area. Located
only a few minutes from the wide variety of shops, services and
leisure amenities of Burton-on-Trent, the home was recently awarded
a "Two-Star" "Good" rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC),
the Government's regulator for care services.
With 80% of Mount Pleasant's staff approved to deal with the
problems surrounding dementia by the Alzheimer Society, the home
has been developing a culture of awareness when it comes to helping
residents to cope with dementia. Changes to the communal space at
the home to make sure they are dementia friendly - such as
enclosing the garden - are also in the pipeline.
Commenting on the changes, the home's Manager, Anne Marie
Robinson, said:
"We're hugely proud to be able to build on our strong reputation
for providing the highest quality residential care. Even just small
changes can have a big impact on our residents' lives, and we can
now provide continuity of care to meet the changing needs of those
in our care.
"The home's living and communal space has been specifically
designed to provide an outstanding living environment in what is a
beautiful rural setting, and our focus is on making sure we meet
and exceed the highest dementia care standards for the people in
our care."
