'Free stuff' is an important tool in the digital armoury of any
commercial venture, according to an expert from a specialist ideas
business who will be speaking to creative businesspeople in
Leicester on 28th April.
Toby Moores set up games and media company Sleepydog over 12
years ago, and he is still groundbreaking in his novel approach to
making money in the new digital economy. His view is that creative
people, such as writers and film makers, who are too precious over
digital rights could be costing themselves money.
"Many creative businesses underestimate the value of making free
content available online, and whilst it's important to make money
from your original content, the free part can really enhance the
world you have created."
He continues "for example the growth of fan fiction based on
worlds dreamed up by writers like Terry Pratchett or JK Rowling has
not hindered the sales of their original content. In fact, it has
created new interest in the worlds of Hogwarts and Discworld. The
key to success is knowing how to charge and for what."
Toby's seminar will be held on Wednesday 28th April from 10am to
12noon and is entitled 'What does 'free' really mean in social
media?' It is part of a series of money-themed events hosted by De
Montfort University's CreativeCoffee Club at Phoenix Square Digital
Media Centre and will be attended by creative people from across
Leicestershire.
CreativeCoffee Club manager and Head of Development at Phoenix
Square, Dorothy Warner, said "Creative people often struggle with
the concept of 'Free'; they have so many ideas that they don't
realize how valuable they are to other people. Toby will inevitably
spark some interesting conversations and it will be fascinating to
see how members take it forward"
