For the first time ever, a dawn chorus walk is being led around
the magnificent Shugborough Estate, near Stafford.
The stately home, which is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty, is arguably the best place in the county to hear springtime
birdsong.
The cacophony of chattering birdlife has now been building on
the estate for a few weeks and is expected to reach its magnificent
orchestral peak on Sunday May 9.
On this morning, Roger Broadbent, member of West Midlands Bird
Club and expert on the Shugborough birdlife, will lead guests on a
unique early morning tour of the estate's stunning landscape.
For the first time, guests will be invited onto the estate at
4.30am in readiness for the crescendo of Shugborough's
awe-inspiring dawn chorus.
Walkers will be led around the magnificent historic landscape as
Roger gives an informative talk on Shugborough's star singers.
The tour will finish with a 6am treat of either hearty bacon
rolls or warm, fresh croissants and jam along with tea and coffee
in the estate's Lady Walk Tearoom.
Places on the walk (including breakfast) cost £10 and must
be pre-booked. Early booking is strongly advised. To reserve a
place contact the Sales and Promotions team on 01889 881 388.
The unique habitats of woodland, wetland, heathland and formal
gardens make the estate a unique wildlife habitat within
Staffordshire. Shugborough is a stronghold for many species
which are endangered or in decline including lesser spotted
woodpeckers, lapwings and cuckoos.
The dawn chorus walk is the first of a series of initiatives to
celebrate Shugborough's rich wildlife. Later in May, the estate
will launch a brand new wildlife-inspired sculpture trail in the
gardens. The trail will be launched at a family event on Sunday May
23 when wildlife enthusiasts from across the area will come to
Shugborough to highlight their work and run fun activities for all
the family.
