The world renowned Shakespeare's Globe is coming to the
magnificent Shugborough Estate for the first time ever.
Shakespeare's Globe on Tour will be performing A Midsummer
Night's Dream across three nights in May at the breathtaking
tourist attraction, near Stafford.
A small troupe of actors will present a stripped down version of
Shakespeare's most sparkling comedy in front of Shugborough's
stunning Doric Temple - reviving the old Globe principle of outdoor
playing.
The event is the latest in this year's bumper programme at the
County Council-run tourist attraction. Shugborough is fast becoming
one of the best events venues in the West Midlands as the likes of
Jools Holland, Rick Astley and Tony Hadley perform at the
magnificent stately home this year.
The estate is also re-hosting it's sell out Outdoor Picnic Movie
Nights with a repeat of last year's Mamma Mia movie and new for
this year, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In 2009, the movie nights
attracted over 7,000 people and even more are expected to turn up
and dance the night away this year.
Shugborough Group Manager Liz Carruthers said: "Shakespeare's
Globe is known right across the world, so to attract them to
perform at the Shugborough Estate is a real coup.
"The estate looks absolutely breath-taking in mid-May and I
can't think of a more suitable or beautiful location to watch A
Midsummer Night's Dream.
"This year's event programme really is our best ever with a new
steam spectacular, a garden and home lovers show and a classic car
show. We are also hoping to have additional theatre in the gardens
during the summer which will hopefully include an afternoon of
children's theatre."
Shakespeare's Globe on Tour will be performing at Shugborough
from May 16-18. Early booking is advised as space on the Doric Lawn
is limited. Tickets can be booked by calling 0845 459 8900 or
online at www.shakespeares-globe.org. Tickets prices are £15
adults and £10 children.
This funny, dazzling and incredibly popular play is directed by
Raz Shaw and includes Bethan Walker as Puck and Will Mannering as
Bottom.
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole,
Shakespeare's Globe Theatre season plays in repertory from April to
October annually, and has gained an international reputation for
performance excellence. Over the past two years the Globe has
extended its work to reach audiences around the country, with great
success.
Dominic Dromgoole explained: "The Globe was born out of a
touring company culture, and that culture remained vital to it
while it flourished. We are delighted to be exploring again
the tradition of taking Shakespeare into non-theatrical
spaces."
