A planning application has been submitted by Morrisons to
develop a foodstore and new district centre at Edgbaston
Galleries.
The application is for a mixed use scheme of 5,834 sq m and
includes a Morrisons supermarket of 4,813 sq m, a number of
independent retail units and office space.
Within the proposed Morrisons food store there will be a
café and a dry cleaners. 257 car park spaces will be
provided across two levels.
The scheme has been designed to complement and enhance the
nearby existing Harborne Road properties and the wider conservation
area. The buildings will be two storeys high and feature materials
and landscaping reflective of the quality of buildings and trees
across the Calthorpe Estate.
Access to the store will be gained from Harborne Road and Hagley
Road, where a new filter lane is proposed. Plans include improved
pedestrian walkways across the Hagley Road and Harborne Road which
will allow people to cross the road safely. The public realm will
contain high quality features, and attractive landscaping in the
approaches to the development.
Richard Allen, Chief Executive of Calthorpe Estates said: "We
are delighted to have an agreement in place with Morrisons that
will allow the site, which is an important gateway to the city, to
be regenerated. Morrisons will deliver an outstanding mixed use
scheme and will create much needed new jobs within the current
economic climate. The plans complement our Estate strategy to
develop new services and benefits to the people who live, work and
visit the area."
