Shropshire man has a change of direction

A Telford man has had a complete career change, after help and guidance from County Training, Shropshire's largest training provider.

Paul Evans, 40, from Ketley, had been unemployed for three years, having previously worked as a postman for almost 20 years.

Paul commented "I came to County Training in November 2009, wanting help to get back into work. I didn't have many in qualifications or recent work experience, so my confidence was low, I really felt as if I would never gain long term employment again."

Paul worked with County Training, part of Shropshire Council, on the European Socail Fund (ESF) Flexible Routeway programme, focussing on job search, CV writing, interview skills and letter writing. Through this initiative, a short work placement was set up at a local shop in Telford, handling customer enquiries and stock control. This helped to rebuild Paul's confidence and provide him with recent work experience and reference.

Whilst on programme, Paul successfully completed his City and Guilds BIIAB Level 2 National Certificate for Doors Supervisors  qualification. Having achieved these qualifications and completing his placement, armed with his new job search techniques, Paul applied for a job at Securit Midlands Ltd as a Security Guard. He was successful and started his new job in November 2009.

Paul commented "To be back in full-time work again is great. County Training provided the support I needed and helped me to feel more positive which improved my self confidence. The work placement has also really helped me to gain those all important references and experience. I now also have a package of qualifications, which, without their help, may not have been possible."

Councillor Stephen Charmley, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Leisure, commented "County Training's  ESF Flexible Routeway programme provides many individuals with support and expertise to help them get into work, I would urge any one who is out of work and considering looking for a job to contact County Training to find out what support is available."
