The Family Law team at Nottingham-based Fraser Brown is
predicting the divorce rate will rocket during 2010, as the
improving economic situation seen so far this year allows couples
who previously could not afford to separate to consider their
options once again.
While divorce rates have typically been low for the last few
years - and the Office for National Statistics announced that 2008
saw the lowest level since 1979 - the last two months have been
busier than ever, signaling that things may be about to change.
Partner and Head of Family Law, Pramila Meghani, said, "January
and February are usually the busiest times of year for us - many
couples experience problems over the Christmas and New Year period.
However this year we've seen a dramatic increase in the number of
new appointments as well as several couples who have returned after
putting plans on hold last year."
Pramila believes the increase may be as a result of several
things, "The improving property market is certainly a factor, as it
makes selling the marital home and releasing that money much
easier. Also, people's financial situation is generally improving,
which means options such as divorce, that were dismissed as too
expensive last year, are now being considered."
Demand for services such as mediation are also expected to
increase as couples who have had their plans on hold look to act
quickly and make a fresh start in the New Year. However she
emphasised that although couples may be frustrated with waiting,
they should not rush forward, but ensure they are fully informed
before making any decisions.
The team at Fraser Brown is on hand to provide advice and
information on divorce and other options. The firm's new dedicated
Family Law Centre, on Friar Lane, provides additional opportunities
to meet the team with extended opening hours. For further
