Eight members of the drpvideo team spent an icy Saturday night
sleeping rough in aid of the YMCA Worcester as part of this year's
Homelessness Awareness Week.
The key objective for the "Sleep Easy" event was to raise
awareness for homelessness in this bitterly cold time of year.
"Sleep Easy" was designed to enlighten people about just how tough
it is for those without a home, forced to spend day and night
outside exposed to the elements and other threats.
As part of "Sleep Easy", the video team, lead by Director of
Video Dagmar Mackett, spent the night behind the YMCA Worcester
facilities with two cardboard boxes each and some plastic crating
to provide shelter. The team were afforded the small luxury of hot
drinks throughout the night, along with the safe environment. These
comforts did little to detract from the freezing temperatures and
sobering situation, although the team were all well aware that they
had a much easier experience of sleeping rough than the individuals
they were supporting through the scheme. All eight were extremely
proud to contribute to the aims of "Sleep Easy" as they were also
sponsored by colleagues and family raising £350 in
donations.
The idea to take part in the event was born out of drpvideo's
partnership with the YMCA to develop a Homelessness Awareness DVD,
which will be shown to pupils in secondary schools across the city
of Worcester later this year. The DVD will highlight the reasons
for homelessness, the difficulties homeless people face every day
but also point out ways to help those in need. As part of the
project, drpvideo are mentoring 20 residents of the YMCA Worcester
to get involved with the project, from pre-production to production
and post.
Throughout 2010, the whole of the drpteam across all divisions
is committed to supporting at least 30 community and charity
projects as part of our 30th anniversary celebrations and the Sleep
Easy project provided the video team with an opportunity to help
the group towards our goal, while supporting an initiative they
cared deeply about.
