Rider Levett Bucknall Europe, launched just twelve months ago,
has delivered another key success with an appointment to Western
Europe's first new nuclear reactor.
The property and cost consultant together with its French
partner Sterling Quest has been appointed as cost consultants to
the Olikuoto 3 (OL3) reactor in Finland, the first reactor to be
built in a decade.
Upon completion OL3 will be the biggest nuclear reactor in the
world and will start to pump out electricity in 2012. The
excavation site alone is the size of 55 football fields.
Mark Weaver, managing partner of Rider Levett Bucknall in
Birmingham, the team that helped to cement the deal, commented:
"There is no doubt that the ethos behind the Rider Levett Bucknall
Europe alliance played a pivotal role in Sterling Quest and Rider
Levett Bucknall being successful in this bid.
"RLB Europe was launched to enable the UK office network to work
closely with other European partners in delivering a stronger
offering to major international clients.
"The team that we were able to propose to work on the site
demonstrated that we had the right skills and understanding of what
is needed to work on this size of project. Not only that, but we
understand the culture of working on a nuclear reactor site and
employ specialists that have hands on experience of doing
this."
Rider Levett Bucknall has provided services to the nuclear and
engineering industry for more than 25 years on behalf of clients
which include Sellafield Ltd, Low level waste repositiory, UKAEA,
NDA, Springfield Fuels Ltd and Magnox.
Deryck Barton, head of nuclear for Rider Levett Bucknall who is
based at the consultancy's Warrington office added: "The bank of
expertise that Rider Levett Bucknall has built up during the last
two decades is proving invaluable in the current energy climate,
especially as nuclear continues to play such a high profile role in
the government's energy policy agenda.
"These skills have been honed and refined as procurement and
project control practices have changed and as a result Rider Levett
Bucknall is acknowledged for its highly skilled staff. We
understand the skills, disciplines and very strict requirements
needed for delivering this type of project as well as the very
individual culture that exists on nuclear sites too."
"The new generation of sites will generate a quarter of the
country's energy by 2025 compared to 13 per cent now and Rider
Levett Bucknall is very much part of the nuclear future. We have
been in ongoing discussions with all the major generating companies
for some time as well as obviously continuing to liasie closely
with our existing client on future decommissioning projects."
Rider Levett Bucknall has been appointed to a number of
different roles during its 25 year history within the nuclear
sector. These include quantity surveying, project controls, project
management, cost engineering, estimating, programme management
through to the development of bespoke innovative solutions to
specific Energy users needs.
