A young man from Telford is celebrating after securing a
two-year apprenticeship at The Wrekin Housing Trust in Telford.
Richard Jones, aged 17, from Madeley, had been searching for
work and opportunities to gain experience since finishing school.
In this unsettled economic climate, this was proving to be a
challenge. He came to County Training, part of Shropshire Council,
in May 2009 on an Entry to Employment (e2e) programme, wishing to
improve his employability skills, find work or go into an
apprenticeship.
e2e helps 16 to 18 year olds progress on to work, college or
training. It is a learning programme based on the needs of the
individual, creating a personalised timetable of 16 - 30 hours a
week to best suit individual learning styles and needs. This could
include essential skills, ICT, work based qualifications or
practical experience in a work placement.
While on the e2e program, Richard completed Key Skill
certificates in Communication and Application of Number Level 1 and
found a two week work placement with The Wrekin Housing Trust in
Telford.
Richard said: "I really enjoyed my placement and it gave me a
real insight into what working is really like."
The Wrekin Housing Trust were so impressed with Richard they
extended his placement and in July 2009 Richard attended an open
day at the company for a three year apprenticeship, which he is due
to start in September 2009. With over 80 applicants applying for
the positions, it was highly competitive. However, Richard's
enthusiasm and experience with the company placed him in good stead
and he was selected for a placement.
Richard commented: "I can't wait to start working as an
Environmental Apprentice. I really loved my placement and it was a
great opportunity, which gave me the confidence to apply for this
apprenticeship. I am looking forward to carrying on working with
the Trust."
The Wrekin Housing Trust is a registered social landlord, which
was established in 1999 when over 13,000 homes were transferred
from Telford & Wrekin Council - the country's largest transfer
of homes at that time. The Trust is a non-profit making
organisation that provides quality homes at an affordable rent. It
is the largest Housing Association in Shropshire.
Councillor Steve Charmely, Portfolio Holder for Culture and
Leisure, commented: "Richard's inspiring story is a perfect
illustration of how volunteer work can provide valuable experience
for those seeking work and also provide an opportunity for
employers to get to know individuals when they are considering
recruiting new staff, resulting in a win-win situation for all
involved."
