An apprenticeship graduate from Iron bridge is thrilled to have
gained a once in a life time experience, to meet and learn from a
Michelin Stared chef Jean-Christophe Novelli.
Roxanne McDonald, Head Chef at the Malthouse in Ironbridge, was
over the moon to discover that she had won the chance to
participate in a cook off being judged by the celebrity chef. On 23
September, Roxanne travelled to Chesterfield to meet
Jean-Christophe as part of a cook-off competition organised by
Carlsberg.
In 2003 Roxanne completed her apprenticeship in Food Preparation
and Cooking NVQ Level 2, with County Training, part of Shropshire
Council. At the age of 19, having impressed bossed with her hard
work and enthusiasm she became Head Chef at the Malthouse.
Impressed with the scheme and training provided by County Training,
Roxanne now has three Apprentices working for her who help her to
produce over a 1000 covers per week
Roxanne said "I am delighted to have been given the opportunity
to work alongside Chef Novelli and learn new skills, recipes and
trade secrets. Experience and skill is paramount in this industry
which is why the work based training I did on my apprenticeship has
really helped me."
Apprenticeships are aimed at those aged 16 to 18, providing the
opportunity to gain skills and qualifications by working and
studying. Young people gain 'real' paid work and receive training
towards a nationally recognised qualification. Apprenticeships are
proving valuable in many sectors of industry and commerce - in
traditional areas as well as more contemporary professions.
Councillor Steve Charmley, Portfolio Holder for Culture and
Leisure commented "Roxanne is a great example of the importance of
work based training, and really demonstrates why Apprenticeships
are so highly regarded."
County Training currently has funding for 16 - 18 year olds
wanting to embark on a career in the Catering & Hospitality
Sector through an apprenticeship. For more information on
Apprenticeships or Training within the Catering & Hospitality
industry, please call County Training on 01743 255191.
