Racing rowers from Mansell Construction Services have made a
splash by donating an "oarsome" £10,000 to BID Services -
formerly the Birmingham Institute for the Deaf.
The team from Mansell's Stourbridge-based Western region raised
the cash with a dragon boat race at Chasewater Country Park
supported by Mansell staff and relatives.
That achievement, combined with other fund raising efforts by
Mansell staff including an It's a Knockout event, a chariot relay
race across the UK, dress-down days, charity walks and selling hand
made greetings cards, meant that the Birmingham Institute for the
Deaf was £10,000 better off.
The cash was handed over to Bryan Sheppard, chief executive of
BID and trust fund-raiser Terry Yarnall by Jamie Harrison and
Debbie Haden of Mansell.
Terry Yarnall said, "BID is always grateful for the donations it
receives, especially from activities undertaken by company
employees. The money will help BID continue its vital work to
support the deaf community within the West Midlands in many areas
of their lives."
As part of a year-long fund-raising drive to mark the company's
100th anniversary, Mansell's charity fund raising efforts raised
more than £66,000 in 2008 and more than £1 million
nationwide. As well as BID, money has been handed over to Macmillan
Cancer Support, Cancer Support Dudley, Mary Stevens Hospice and the
Fire Fighters Charity.
As well as being beneficiaries, BID is also a customer of
Mansell. The Institute's new headquarters in Ladywood, Birmingham
was built by Mansell in 2007.
