Business Link and Nottingham City Council are proud to announce that the first business to benefit from the Market Trader Start-Up Scheme has begun operating in the Victoria Centre Market.

The Market Trader Start-Up Scheme is a partnership between Nottingham's Markets and the regional Business Link Start-Up Service and aims to provide local budding entrepreneurs with the opportunity to develop skills to run their own business.

Through the scheme, market traders can receive a discount of up to 50% discount on stall fees for the first 6 months of trading and have access to Business Link's comprehensive range of free start-up services that provide practical help, advice and information on all aspects involved in setting up a new business.

Knitty Gritty, created and run by the partnership of Ed Jaison and Lizzi Young, will be providing contemporary and specialist knit supplies. Lizzi said, "The Victoria Centre Market is an ideal start-up venue for us and with the support from both Nottingham City Council and the regional Business Link service, we can look forward to developing Knitty Gritty into a leading independent focal point for Nottingham's knitters."

Councillor Katrina Bull, Nottingham City Council's Portfolio holder for Environment and Climate Change, said "It's exciting to see the introduction of such innovative ideas and shows that despite the difficult economic times new business ventures can still have the confidence to begin their enterprise knowing that they will get support throughout. We are delighted that Knitty Gritty have begun trading and we wish them a long and successful future in the Victoria Centre Market"

Andrea Huscroft, spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Business Venture (NBV) who are responsible for providing local access to the regional Business Link Start-Up service says, "It's fantastic that the first business is up and running through the scheme. Working with the Business Link Start-Up Service, Knitty Gritty has received access to invaluable advice and support to help give their fledgling business the best possible start, and this ongoing support will continue as they grow and succeed."

The Business Link Start-Up Service offers access to free advice for people starting their own business or those currently running their own business who may need extra help and advice to grow and develop. Such support includes comprehensive training on:

-       Deciding to start

-       Business planning

-       Financial planning
