The successful delivery of Corby's new railway station has been
recognised by a leading professional body within the transport
industry.
At its annual award ceremony, held on 19 June 2009 at The Royal
Airforce Museum in Hendon, London, the Institution of Highways and
Transportation (IHT) named Corby Railway Station as the winner of
the IHT/ Costain Award for Effective Partnerships.
The IHT Awards celebrate innovative achievements and rewards
case study examples of best practice that can be emulated by other
professionals within the transportation industry.
In the case of Corby Railway Station, the Award was given in
recognition of the close partnership working that enabled the
£8.3m station to be constructed on time, on budget and to a
very high standard.
In making the award, Judges commented: "A transformational
project delivered to a very constrained timescale. The project
clearly required a very effective partnership to manage the
requirements of a large number of stakeholders combined with the
multiplicity of inter-agency working. The submission demonstrated
very clearly that this had been achieved very effectively."
Construction of the station began in February 2008 and was
completed in December 2008. The project signalled the end of a 40
year wait for the return of a passenger rail service and means
Corby is no longer the largest town in Europe without a train
station.
An interim service run by East Midlands Trains began in February
2009 and the full service, including a direct hourly service
between Corby and London St Pancras, was officially launched in
April 2009.
The Award was presented to project consultants WYG and the Homes
and Communities Agency, a funding partner and site owner, by
sporting legend Sir Geoff Hurst MBE.
