The capacity of the rail freight network in the West Midlands
region was boosted this month with the official opening of the new
Telford International Railfreight Park by Shadow Secretary of State
for Transport, Theresa Villiers MP.
The terminal, which can load or unload up to four freight trains
a day, was part funded by the Telford & Wrekin Council,
Advantage West Midlands, Homes and Communities Agency and the
European Regional Development Fund.
Theresa Villiers said: "The opening of Telford International
Railfreight Park is good news for the rail freight industry and for
the local economy.
"Rail freight is a vital part of the UK supply chain. Not only
does it have a hugely important role to play in moving goods around
the country efficiently, but by taking heavy trucks off our roads,
it is an essential tool in tackling climate change and reducing
congestion."
Cllr Eric Carter, Cabinet Member Regeneration - Telford &
Wrekin Council, said: "This will make the borough a more attractive
place for business and will boost job creation and will firmly
underline the point that Telford and Wrekin has the right
infrastructure for business and is ready to meet the challenges of
the future."
Mark Pearce, Corporate Director of Economic Regeneration,
Advantage West Midlands, said: "Today's opening not only marks a
significant day for Telford but for the whole of the West Midlands
region.
"The new rail freight facility will provide local companies with
an alternative, greener transportation choice and a means to access
new and existing markets. It will also help to attract regional,
national and international inward investment to the area, as well
as retaining existing jobs."
Around 180 invited guests invited to the official opening
watched freight trains from DB Shenker and Direct Rail Services
break a banner to celebrate the launch of the new terminal. The
Shadow Minister then unveiled a plaque on a locomotive provided by
Direct Rail Services, naming it 'Telford International Railfreight
Park - June 2009'.
