Mansell staff working on a £6 million project to build a
new primary school in Stoke-on-Trent have been taking part in a
Skills Week to demonstrate building skills to the pupils who will
occupy the new buildings.
Mansell apprentices led a series of demonstrations for the
youngsters, including plumbing, tiling, bricklaying and carpeting
before allowing the pupils to have a go themselves.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council's building team also joined the
event.
Mansell also ran health and safety assemblies for the youngsters
attended by the Considerate Constructors mascot Ivor Goodsite.
There was also a construction competition to build a miniature
structure strong enough to hold a golf ball.
The Education and Leisure division of Mansell's
Stourbridge-based Western region is constructing a new two-form
entry school building to provide space for 480 pupils at Gladstone
Primary School. The school has been operating across two sites
since 2004 when the school was established following the
amalgamation of a primary and infants school.
The new building, in Anchor Road, Longton, replaces the school's
existing premises, and staff and pupils had a major input into the
design of the building. The layout for the new school is based on
the concept of teaching in a flexible space, with an anticipated
total of 2,444 square metres of floor space. This allows
flexibility for furniture layout and provides enough space to bring
the infants and junior schools together.
The work is being carried out for Stoke-on-Trent City Council
and is due for completion towards the end of the year.
