Birmingham: A vibrant, cultural hot spot… More self
assured than it has been in ages That's the verdict of the
Lonely Planet! The latest edition of the renowned guide book is
full of praise for Birmingham and names it as one that's on the
up.
Dave Hodgson, marketing director at Marketing Birmingham,
says: "The Lonely Planet guide recognises Birmingham's
qualities - from award winning restaurants to being a shopping
mecca. The guide has 10 pages devoted to Birmingham, its hotels,
restaurants and activities - this is great news for the
city!
"At Marketing Birmingham, we focus on improving perceptions of
Birmingham and attracting visitors to the city. Working with the
major travel guides is key to this. We liaise closely with the
guides including the Lonely Planet and have hosted media visits for
Rough Guide, AA Guide and Fodor Travel.
"Travel guides play a big part in welcoming tourists to the
city, and we're expecting many UK visitors to enjoy what's on their
doorstep this summer with the advent of the 'staycation'.
Birmingham's tourism centres work hard to ensure tourists have a
great experience when they're here."
David Else, the Coordinating Author of Lonely Planet's new Great
Britain guidebook:; "The Midlands is commonly an area that people
pass through rather than a destination in its own right, but
people shouldn't overlook the gems that the region offers. Cities
like Birmingham have become vibrant and cosmopolitan places with
lots to offer."
